Constructing A Tall Building With Structural Steel
Posted on: 1 June 2016
Engineers are regularly looking for ways to make buildings even taller. There are many obstacles to the construction of a tall building, but with the proper engineering methods, these obstacles can be overcome. If you feel that your business has a need for a very tall building, there are several issues you will need to discuss with your structural engineers.
Wind At High Altitudes
The taller the building, the more wind that the building will need to be able to resist. This does not mean that the building does not have the ability to resist the wind, but it will need to be engineered to be stronger. For the building to be able to resist the force of the wind, it must be engineered so that it is known that the building will be able to resist the force of wind. This is done by conducting tests on the building materials within a wind tunnel.
Another issue is that the strong winds can make those within the building uncomfortable. Therefore, it is necessary to change the profile of the building to improve comfort. Doing so will reduce the wind force of the building and will also make it easier for the building to remain upright.
Resisting Earthquakes
Taller buildings are tested to make sure that they can resist earthquakes before they are even built. These buildings are made more resistant to earthquakes through the use of lateral force resisting systems. These consist of large walls in the center and enormous columns near the perimeter. Frames that have rigid joints and very flexible beams will be more resistant to earthquakes and other disasters.
Multiple Elevators
It is necessary to determine how guests will be transferred from the bottom to the top of the building when constructing very tall buildings. This is accomplished by having more than one elevator system and by having lateral transfer levels where visitors will get off of one elevator and onto another. To have so many elevators, it is necessary to create a large central space for them. There will either need to be a solid wall or a lateral force resisting system.
Constructing a tall building is a special project that will require some of the most talented engineers you can find. However, if you can assemble a great team full of structural engineers who have constructed such buildings before, you will succeed.
