What Are Stainless Steel Valves Used For In The Oil And Gas Industry
Posted on: 14 December 2019
The oil and gas industry heavily relies on stainless steel valves to control the materials. Here is a look at some of the ways stainless steel valves are used in the oil or gas industry.
The valves may be used to regulate the pressure inside lines or tanks.
Stainless steel valves often show up on tanks and lines in the oil and gas industry to regulate pressure inside of lines or tanks. Pressure can accumulate inside of lines and tanks that poses a hazard because too much pressure can lead to an explosion. Employees can open a simple valve, relieve pressure from a line, and protect the entire setup.
The valves are used for controlling the flow of fluid through a pipe.
Hands down, one of the most common uses for valves made out of stainless steel in the oil and gas industry is to control the flow of oil or gas through lines. For example, a valve may be adjusted to control the flow of material through a line because:
- There is an overcrowding of materials at the other end of the line and the flow needs to slow down
- You need to adjust the flow to accommodate for work in one section of the line
- There is a need for dosing other agents into the flow of materials
The valves are used to filter debris from certain sections of a pipeline.
Just as it is with other fluid materials, debris in oil can contaminate the fluid and generate problems. Even gaseous materials can be contaminated with debris as they move through a series of pipes or lines and it can generate a lot of issues. Some stainless steel valves are specifically designed to filter out debris at the point in the line where the valve is installed. For example, some valves have basket strainers inside that can be turned into the line using the valve.
The valves are used to start and stop the flow of fuels to some areas.
It is not uncommon to have to start or stop the flow of fuel in the lines from going to certain points in a system of pipelines. Stainless steel stop valves are often used specifically for this purpose, and they do a pretty amazing job at doing so. These valves are designed to shut a section of a line off completely so no materials can get through at all.
